DEALS3D: Photogrammetric point cloud of the Maria-Schmerz-Kapelle in Randersacker

Events such as floods, fires, landslides and heavy rain threaten irretrievable cultura, architectural and archeological heritage, which are among the critical infrastructures. In 2019, for example, a fire severely damaged the church of Notre Dame. The implementation of the European Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage has led to an enormous increase in the number of monument preservation measures. The authorities responsible for the care of monuments are facing considerable challenges. Standards, implementation guidelines and technical solutions for the implementation of the measures are currently lacking.

Goals and procedure

The DEALS3D project is developing a technical solution for creating accurate three-dimensional models of culturally relevant buildings. In order to capture all required perspectives, images are generated and automatically fused with data from ground-based 3D sensors and sensors carried by unmanned flight systems. Planning algorithms calculate both the best locations for stationary sensors and the optimal flight routes of the flight systems. Furthermore, standards for data storage are developed, which allow an easy comparison of the data in an intact state with the recordings after a damage event.

Innovations and perspectives

With the combination of ground-based and mobile sensors, the advantages of both methods are combined for the first time and used for architectural monuments. This allows detailed and complete recordings of cultural assets of any size. Standardized storage and archiving enables the responsible authorities to access all collected data. Furthermore, damage images can be created and compared with the existing data for the reconstruction of the monuments.
