Satellite Operations & Ground Station Engineer (m/f/d)

We operate ZfT’s small satellites from our own ground station and mission control in Würzburg. Since July 2026, the three satellites of the TOM formation mission, CUBY and the CloudCT precursor have been in orbit. Alongside QUBE and QUBE2, our fleet consist of 11 satellites which we are currently operating. Our next missions are already lined up: the ten CloudCT satellites, Tamariw and LoLaSat. To get there, we are looking for new team members in satellite operations and at the ground station.

Your tasks

• Plan and run satellite overpasses in routine operations, monitoring the health of our spacecraft and ground station.
• Operate, maintain and extend our ground station, from antennas and RF chain to SDRs and modems. This includes RF measurements and troubleshooting of communication links.
• Analyse anomalies and support contingency operations through to resolution.
• Help prepare LEOP and commissioning of our upcoming missions, including integration and testing of new ground segment systems.
• Write and maintain operations procedures and scripts that automate recurring operations tasks. You can also bring in software development expertise to improve operations tools and efficiency.

What you bring

• Completed degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in aerospace, electrical or communications engineering, computer science, or a comparable qualification
• A solid background in either RF engineering or computer science / software development
• You can set up and calculate a link budget for a satellite link on your own.
• Fluent English, written and spoken, as English is our team language
• Willingness to work at night when satellite passes require it

Nice to have

• Experience in satellite operations or ground segment engineering
• Knowledge of signal processing and hands-on experience with software-defined radios (SDR)
• Practical experience with RF test equipment and with installing, maintaining and troubleshooting hardware
• Confident with Linux and scripting, e.g. in Python
• Amateur radio (HAM) licence
• German language skills
