One of the big technical challanges for the coming years will be the realization of "smart grids". In within that "internet for energy" there have to be coordinated energy-production, energy-storage and energy-consumption. The classical energy-networks will be overlayed by automation an telecommunication networks and thats a typical application for telematics.
